Chelsea Middle School Head Wrestling Coach
Shane Rodriguez
Building Confidence, Character, and Champions
Coach Shane Rodriguez, known to his athletes and students as “Coach Rod,” brings decades of experience in education and athletics to the Chelsea wrestling community. As Chelsea's Head Middle School Wrestling Coach, he plays an important role in helping young wrestlers transition from the fundamentals of youth wrestling to the challenges of middle school and high school competition.
His wrestling story
Coach Rod was a standout wrestler at Elk Rapids High School, finishing his varsity career with 115 wins — second all-time in school history, as his biography records it.
He was a three-time regional qualifier and qualified for the state tournament during his senior year.
Coaching career
His wrestling coaching career began in 2003 and has included positions with Chelsea, Manchester, Stockbridge, and Dexter:
- Volunteer Chelsea Varsity Wrestling Coach (2003–2004)
- Manchester Head Middle School Wrestling Coach (2005)
- Chelsea Assistant Middle School Wrestling Coach (2006 and 2013)
- Stockbridge Assistant Varsity Wrestling Coach (2007)
- Dexter Head Varsity Wrestling Coach (2007–2011)
- Chelsea Head Middle School Wrestling Coach (2022–Present)
During his time as Dexter's Head Varsity Wrestling Coach, he coached eight state qualifiers and five All-State wrestlers.
Since returning to Chelsea's middle school program in 2022, he has helped sustain a wrestling program with more than 40 wrestlers in each of the past four seasons.
Coaching philosophy
Coach Rod believes that successful wrestling begins with strong fundamentals, maintaining good position, and learning to attack with confidence and control.
He encourages wrestlers to recognize their strengths while embracing opportunities to improve.
His goal is to develop athletes who are confident in what they have learned, willing to work hard, and respectful of the challenges they encounter.
For wrestlers nervous about trying wrestling for the first time, his advice is simple:
“Just go out and have fun and know there are people to help you learn.”
Building Bulldogs From the Mat Up
Coach Rod sees the youth wrestling program as the foundation for Chelsea's future success.
A strong youth program creates momentum into middle school, preparing athletes for varsity competition and the pursuit of conference, district, and regional championships.
More importantly, he believes every level of Chelsea Wrestling should help young athletes become the best versions of themselves.
Beyond the mat
Coach Rod has spent 25 years teaching Spanish at Chelsea Schools, and has coached wrestling, football, and track throughout his career.
His track coaching accomplishments include contributing to more than 15 regional team championships and a Division 2 MHSAA team state championship. As a pole vault coach, he has helped develop more than 40 individual state qualifiers, over 20 individual regional champions, 12 All-State athletes, and seven Division I athletes.
Outside of teaching and coaching, Coach Rod is a proud father of two and enjoys cornhole and poker.
His message to students and athletes reflects the values he brings to every practice:
“Be the kindest, hardest working person in the room.”
What he hopes wrestlers carry
Coach Rod hopes every Chelsea wrestler carries the lessons of the sport well beyond competition.
“Once you have wrestled, everything else is easy.”
He believes hard work, attention to detail, and a dedicated mindset will always benefit wrestlers and the people around them.
